Happy Thanksgiving!


We will be enjoying Thanksgiving #2 today with Justin’s Dad and Jane!

Yesterday’s Workout

We did NOT go to Crossfit.  Evidently we can only handle two days of Crossfit per week!  I was sore and hungry all day.  So I rested.

Body Butta!

I made body butter for the first time.


There are a ton of ideas on Pinterest so I read through ALL. OF. THEM.

I started by melting together Shea Butter and Coconut Oil.


The next step is to let these oils set up and harden just a bit.  It’s cold enough in Kansas City that I could put the bowl out in our screened in porch.

Once it set up, I added Sweet Almond Oil and Young Living Essential Oils.

Then it was time to get the mixer out.  I used my hand mixer on high until it was the consistency of soft butter.  You can tell when it’s getting close because it changes color from yellow to white.  Keep going!

Then I filled my containers.  This was my first batch and it filled two of my 8 oz. containers about 3/4 of the way.  I used plastic (made of PET – light weight material well suited for liquids, gels, lotions, creams and products containing essential oils).  Most people will tell you to use glass when storing essential oils but I also read that as long as the oil is in a carrier it will store just fine in PET containers.


It turned out a little stiffer and grittier than the second batch.

So, the second batch turned out a little different for several reasons.  I left the Shea and Coconut Oil on the heat for longer (not on purpose) and I started mixing it with the hand mixer before it became a solid again (because I’m impatient).  The first batch was completely hard when I started mixing, the second batch was just slighting solid around the edges.


Here is what the two batches looked like.


See how the two on the ends are creamier?  I googled why this happened and learned that I should have melted the Shea butter and Coconut Oil on a lower heat for 20 minutes.  I should also start mixing about the time I started with the second batch.  The melted oils do not need to be completely solid before you start mixing.  They need to be set up and starting to become solid around the edges. Then add the liquid oil and essential oils and starting mixing!

Also, it takes A LOT of essential oils to be able to smell them.  I can’t really tell I added any oils in these except for the two with geranium and all I can smell is geranium!

It will be fun to keep playing with making these.  They are easy to make and pretty inexpensive.

Shea Butter: $15.99 (I used about 1/2)

Coconut Oil:  $46.00 (this tub will probably last the rest of my life!)

Sweet Almond Oil: $8.95

Young Living Oils – I used 15 drops.  (I added 4 drops of Purification to Body Butter #1 and 4 drops of lemon myrtle to Body Butter #2 after they had set over night and then mixed in because I didn’t think they smelled good enough!)

Geranium: $41.25 - has a wonderfully uplifting, calming, flowery scent. It is excellent for the skin, and its aromatic influence helps release negative memories. Used traditionally to support the circulatory and nervous systems, a great deal of its strength lies in its ability to revitalize body tissues

Melrose: $17.75 - provides a protective barrier against skin challenges. When diffused, Melrose can help dispel odors.

Citrus Fresh: $15.25 - is a relaxing, calming blend loved by children and adults alike. Rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene, it supports the immune system and overall health wile bringing about a sense of well-being, creativity, and feelings of joy. It also works as an air purifier.

Purification: $18.75 - an be used directly on the skin to cleanse and soothe. When diffused, it helps to purify and cleanse the air from environmental impurities including cigarette smoke and other disagreeable odors.

Grapefruit: $16.75 - has a fresh, citrus aroma that is energizing and uplifting. Rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene, it is nourishing to the skin. Like many coldpressed citrus oils, it is a popular oil to use in conjunction with weight management programs. Grapefruit may also be used to enhance the flavor of food and water.
