A Lot to Say

The past couple of days have been super busy over here.

Katy

Katy and Piper had a grooming appointment on Wednesday.  Katy has not been acting right since we got home from vacation. Actually BEFORE we even left for vacation.  But she was worse when we got home.  Super lethargic, didn’t want to eat and having incontinence issues. When I took them in for grooming, I asked that the Doctor take a look at her.  Everyone loves Katy at the vet, so all the techs were worried and anxious to get her feeling better.  They all know her so well that they could tell by the way she was laying in my arms that something was wrong.  One of the girls scooped her up and got busy.

Later that morning, I got the call.

This is our new life:  syringes, a sharps box, insulin, special diet.

Katy was diagnosed with diabetes.

2011October 028

She had gone into Diabetic Ketoacidosis.  She almost died.

She was immediately hooked up to an IV and they ran fluids into her for 11 hours on Wednesday.  I brought her home that night with a catheter still in her little arm.

Then took her back for another 8 hours of fluids on Thursday.

Super scary.

I cried my eyes out for two days.  I get so emotional about my animals.  My brain knows that my animals will go before I do (unless I keep acting like this and then Justin may have ME put to sleep!) but my heart wants them to live forever.

She is home and doing well.  Not totally back to normal yet, but we are working on it.

We are not totally out of the water.  I have to give her two shots of insulin a day after she has eaten her prescribed food.  So, far, this has been totally easy.  She eats her food with no problem and then I immediately give her shot.  She acts like she doesn’t even know it’s happened.  Super happy about that.

She goes back to the doctor on Monday to test her blood sugar and urine.

I guess my nursing degree is coming in handy.  I’m glad I have some knowledge about managing diabetes and I’ve given insulin shots to people, so I’m not afraid of that part.

Although I feel scared and overwhelmed at the moment, I feel confident that I will be able to manage Katy’s diabetes and that she will be feeling good and back to normal eventually.

At first Justin was like, “There is no way I can give her a shot”, but after hearing that she has no reaction towards it and it’s a teeny tiny needle, he’s already feeling better about learning the ropes.

Marathon

In the middle of all the Katy drama, there is a marathon that it going to happen on Saturday and, as you know, my youngest brother, James, is running it!  So my Mom came over Wednesday night and we made signs to cheer him on.

My friend Kelli will also be running tomorrow!  I’ll be looking for you, Kell!!

Wedding

AND……

Today is Vann’s WEDDING DAY!!!!

I have been making pin wheels like a crazy person since Wednesday for part of her reception decorations.

Thursday afternoon I met her and two of the other bride’s maids for manis and pedis and then last night was the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.

It has been a busy and exhausting week.  In the end, although our life will have to change a little, we still have our Katy.  I get to be a part of one of the most important days of my sister’s life and I get to cheer on my brother as he sets out to run the race of his life!

Happy Friday Friends!
